NSGSARA WEB SITE Pictou County Volunteer Ground Search And Rescue
Founded in 1996, PCVGSAR attained independent team status under the EMO in January 1997. Pictou County Volunteer Ground Search And Rescue is an all volunteer group working for the Emergency Measures Organization (N.S.) and are called out by them and/or by any Police Agency, to provide Ground Search And Rescue manpower and expertise to find lost persons. We have the primary GSAR responsibility for Pictou County . Our team is also called out to assist teams in other parts of Nova Scotia. These searches outside our primary coverage area are called "Multi-Team" searches and are a type of mutual aid. In 1998 our team was called out to assist in recovery operations at the scene of the SwissAir 111 disaster at Peggy's Cove. Although the newest team in the province, we were number three out of the 25 teams (1998) in Nova Scotia for manhours provided, with 52 of our members providing over 4,000 manhours. In 1999 we responded to 5 GSAR operations for lost persons, 2 of these being outside Pictou County (Musquodoboit Harbour, Halifax County and Tracadie, Guysborough County). In 2000, we responded to 4 Lost Person Incident, 1 of these being outside of Pictou County (Truro, Colchester County) for Truro Town Police, and 3 in Pictou County for the RCMP. We train our members to the Provincial Standard and have completed courses during the winter/spring of 1999/2000 for Probationary Searcher, Searcher, Team Captain and Radio Operator. We anticipate having a Logistics Officer course before summer. We are looking forward to our sister-team and neighbour to the West, Colchester Ground Search And Rescue Association, being the host for a training session for Search Manager.
